For many students of English, understanding the core parts of speech is very important. The noun is one of these, and there are different types of nouns in English.
A noun is a word used to describe a person, place, thing, event, idea, and so on. Nouns represent one of the main elements of sentences, along with verbs, adjectives, prepositions and articles.Nouns usually function as subjects or objects within sentences, although they can also act as adjectives and adverbs.
Here is a list with the different types of nouns:
1. Proper nouns
Used to describe a unique person or thing, proper nouns always start with a capital letter.
Examples include Mary, India, and Manchester United.Walt Disney, Mount Kilimanjaro, Minnesota, Atlantic Ocean, Australia, Empire State Building, Fluffy, Sun Country
2. Common nouns
Common nouns are used to describe persons or things in general.
Examples include girl, country, and team

3. Concrete nouns
Nouns that can be perceived through the five senses are called concrete nouns.
Examples include ball, rainbow and melody.house, ocean, Uncle Mike, bird, photograph, banana, eyes, light, sun, dog, suitcase, flowers
4. Abstract nouns
Nouns that cannot be perceived through the five senses are called abstract nouns. Examples include love, courage, and childhood.love, wealth, happiness, pride, fear, religion, belief, history, communication
5. Countable nouns
Countable nouns can be counted. They also have both a singular and a plural form. Examples include toys, children and books.
6. Non-countable nouns
These nouns (usually) can not be counted, and they don’t have a plural form.
Examples include sympathy, laughter and oxygen.milk, rice, snow, rain, water, food, music
7. Collective nouns
Collective nouns are used to describe groups of things.
Examples include flock, committee and murder.bunch, audience, flock, team, group, family, band, village
8. Compound Nouns
Compound Nouns are made up of two or more words.
Examples include tablecloth, eyeglasses, New York, photograph, daughter-in-law, pigtails, sunlight, snowflake
9. Countable Nouns
Countable Nouns name nouns that you can count.
Examples include bed, cat, movie, train, country, book, phone, match, speaker, clock, pen, David, violin
10. Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable Nouns name nouns that you can't count.
Examples include milk, rice, snow, rain, water, food, music
How to recognize a noun?
- nouns can be recognized by their endings.
- One common ending is "ion" : Some examples are tradition, station, vacation. All these words are nouns.
- In English, for many nouns adding an 's' after also indicates that the noun is in the plural form. Example: dogs, cats, girls, boys.
- Another common noun ending is "ity" Examples of this ending are seen in such nouns as ability, activity, and sensitivity
- Many nouns in English also end in "ment" . Example are instrument, discernment, element
- Some nouns end in "ence" Examples are diligence and excellence,
- Some nouns end in "ance" Examples are significance and insurance,
